Windows 7 - A Linux Terminator?
Microsoft Windows 7 is the answer of the company fear against the rising of Linux in server market. Microsoft knows it could kill the open source Linux in computer, laptop or in netbook and nettop.Windows 7 will be launched in 2009. One of winning feature of the OS is touchscreen. Marketing blitz has already begun. Popular Asus Eee mini laptop will be released in mid-2009 with touch screen capability and powered by Windows 7.
Citigroup claimed that netbooks will account for about a third of all PC growth in 2008. Annual average growth rate of 60% and shipment of the mini laptop to reach 29 million in 2010, as compared with lousy 18% growth for usual laptops.
Obviously netbook is the trend in the future. Microsoft afraid about it as Netbook cannot handle demanding Windows Vista hardware's requirements. So that is why only XP as operating system in the mini notebook. Clearly Linux is more suitable for the netbooks.
The worry of Microsoft become worst as Asus and Acer which is the major player in netbook space ( monopolize 90% of the market) are using Linux in 30% of their netbook. Microsoft not only concern about the 30% Linux based netbook but also the fact that if people get used to Linux in their netbooks, they shall consider buying computer run on Linux as well. It is a real threat to the giant Microsoft as users now have alternative which is cheaper and might be better in the future as Dickie Chang an analyst at Taipei based IDC told Bloomberg. However with Microsot Windows 7 advance feature like touchscreen, Linux based netbook sales are expected to fall.
